Title: Exploring the Pythagorean Theorem
Grade Level: 3rd Grade Secondary School
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Measurement and Calculation in Different Contexts
Objective:
The students will be able to formulate, justify, and use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems.
Methodology: Inquiry-Based Learning
Interdisciplinary Approach:
Incorporate the use of real-life examples and situations where the Pythagorean Theorem can be applied. Collaborate with the Physics teacher to explore the connection between the Pythagorean Theorem and concepts related to distance and displacement.
Session 1: Introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem (50 minutes)
Phase 1: Introduction
- Present a real-life problem that involves calculating unknown lengths in a right-angled triangle.
- Ask students to share their initial thoughts and strategies for solving the problem.
- Introduce the Pythagorean Theorem as a tool to solve such problems.
- Explain the meaning of the theorem and its formula (a² + b² = c²) with visual aids and examples.
Phase 2: Exploration
- Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with a set of tangram pieces.
- Instruct the groups to create right-angled triangles using the tangram pieces.
- Ask the students to measure the lengths of the sides of their triangles and record the measurements.
- Encourage the students to explore the relationship between the lengths of the sides of the triangle.
Phase 3: Reflection and Discussion
- Bring the groups together and facilitate a discussion about their findings.
- Ask the students to share their observations and any patterns they noticed.
- Guide the students towards the concept of the Pythagorean Theorem and its
