Session 1: Exploring Stories from Different Cultures


Objective: Students will be able to describe details of characters and places, share them with their peers to evoke and enrich them, and incorporate new elements from their own culture and other regions.


Class Duration: 45 minutes


Materials:



  • Picture books or storybooks from different cultures

  • Chart paper and markers

  • Art supplies (crayons, colored pencils, etc.)

  • Construction paper

  • Glue


Procedure:



  1. Warm-up (5 minutes):



    • Begin the class by asking the students if they have ever heard a story from a different culture.

    • Encourage them to share any stories they know or have heard.

    • Write their responses on the chart paper.



  2. Introduction to the topic (10 minutes):



    • Display the picture books or storybooks from different cultures.

    • Briefly introduce each book, mentioning the culture it represents.

    • Ask the students if they would like to explore these stories today.



  3. Reading and discussion (15 minutes):



    • Choose one book to read aloud to the students.

    • Pause at different points in the story to ask questions and engage the students in discussion.

    • Encourage them to describe the characters and places they encounter in the story.



  4. Art activity (15 minutes):



    • Provide each student with construction paper, art supplies, and glue.

    • Instruct them to create a collage or drawing depicting their favorite character or place from the story.

    • Encourage them to incorporate elements from their own culture or other regions they are familiar with.
