Title: Estudio de los números: Comparación y ordenación de fracciones

Grade Level: 5th grade

Objective: The student will be able to solve problem situations that involve comparing and ordering fractions by constructing equivalent fractions through multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Methodology: Inquiry-Based Learning

Cross-Curricular Integration: Problem Solving

Session 1: Introduction to Fractions (45 minutes)

  1. Warm-up Activity (10 minutes):

    • Display a variety of objects or images representing equal parts.

    • Ask the students to identify the parts and write the corresponding fractions.

    • Discuss the concept of fractions as a way to represent parts of a whole.

  2. Inquiry Activity (25 minutes):

    • Provide each student with a set of fraction cards (halves, thirds, fourths, etc.).

    • In small groups, ask the students to sort the cards in order from smallest to largest.

    • Encourage discussion and reasoning within the groups.

    • Facilitate a class discussion to share and compare different strategies used.

  3. Reflection and Discussion (10 minutes):

    • Ask the students to reflect on the process of comparing and ordering fractions.

    • Discuss the importance of finding a common denominator when comparing fractions.

    • Introduce the concept of equivalent fractions.

Session 2: Constructing Equivalent Fractions (45 minutes)

  1. Review and Warm-up Activity (10 minutes):

    • Recap the concepts learned in the previous session.

    • Display a fraction and ask the students to identify an equivalent fraction.

  2. Inquiry Activity (25 minutes):

    • Provide each student with fraction strips or manipulatives.
