LISTENING: THE NEWS

A listening exercise for students to listen to news and explore them

1. Use a beam projector to show the news.

2. Ask students if they ever listen to the news on the radio, watch the news on TV or read the news in the newspaper. Why / Why not?

3. Ask students if this is a regular practice at home.

4. Tell students they are going to listen to a news report about a school in India. Show the title now and point at the word ‘cheating’.

5. Talk about that ‘practice’ in schools and ask ‘why do students cheat?’

6. Pre- teach the vocabulary suggested by the author of the activity (that is shown on the same page right before the audio). It is suggested that you read the script first (included with this exercise) and check the vocabulary. There may be some other words you consider should be pre-teach as well.

1.       prevent: to stop; to make it too difficult,

2.       backlash: a very negative response by many people 

3.       trial: a test or experiment, 

4.       put an end: to stop the practice, 

5.       install: to place in an area and make ready for use,

6.       monitor: to watch or check regularly

7.   Have a set of speakers ready for students to listen from their seats clearly. Play the news report but do not scroll down since the text is shown right there and encourage them to listen carefully.

8. Get reactions from students.  Play it once again and make pauses, you can paraphrase, as a training stage, and help them understand what happened. Decide on which the best strategy for your class is with listening.

9. Show the text and invite five volunteers to fill in the blanks with the right information. There are 5 sentences to be completed. You may play the audio and have students get the vocabulary and complete it.

10. Invite the class to help students complete the activity in case they cannot understand the words.
