Story in video to identify the elements of suspense in literature

Sugerencia de uso

1. Ask the students: What is suspense? Organize a brief discussion on the subject.

2. Brainstorm names of stories that students consider suspense stories. Give the reasons. Write the names in the whiteboard.

3. Project the video The Message of Death by M. R. James. It is a 23 minutes long suspense story divided into 5 short chapters. We recommend that after showing each chapter, the teacher give students a short time for questions about the story. In fact, each chapter is written to leave the reader in suspense. Use the vocabulary list included in the block to work in the understanding of the text.

4. Analyze the story in pairs:

• Why the name of the story is The Message of Death?

• Which of the character is the messenger?

• Which elements of the story are unreal?

• Which techniques uses the author to create suspense?

5.As a homework, search for suspense stories, in the school library, home or online. Choose one of them and read it during the next two weeks.
