1. Have the videos suggested in the “MaterialesEducativosDigitales” section ready to show them to students.

2. Ask students what newspapers and radio have in common.

3. Ask students to name three different types of mass media, how much they use them, and how many different types of media they can think of.

4. Tell students they are going to watch a video about the different types of media.  The video shows 12 of them as well as their  definitions

 5. Play the video and make several pauses for students to take notes.  Suggest they make a list of them.The information presented is read by a voice in off so you may want to play it with no sound and make comments and add information if desire.

6.  Ask students how many types of mass media they didn’t know and invite them to work in pairs and discuss their results.

7. Invite some volunteers to share their thoughts with the class how these types of media would benefit them.

8. Ask students if they know when cellular phones were invented or when the Internet started.

9. Tell students they are going to watch a video about the history of mass media with very interesting facts.

10. Ask students to draw pictures and write keywords and /or dates about the media not to copy complete paragraphs.

11. Play the video and make pauses as necessary if you want to give students time to get some notes. The video does not have voice narration but music in the background.

12. When students finish ask them to write 2 or 3 DID YOU KNOW THAT….? Questions to ask other classmates in class.

1. Download the files suggested in the “Materiales Educativos Digitales” section and make copies for students. 2. Review what a headline is  (mini-sentences that succinctly express the angle or perspective of the article.)   and define “the main idea”:

·       a 4-8 word statement.

·       the most important thought

·       a generalization that’s first in rank or importance

·       the principal view

 

3. Ask students to name three different sections in a newspaper.

4.  Distribute the worksheet and ask students to identify the topic (Super Bowl).

5. Monitor the activity and offer help as needed. You may prepare a glossary ( 5-8 new words) beforehand for students to help them work with the headlines.

6. Ask students to work in pairs and find the main ideas in the 6 headlines.

7. Invite pairs of students to sit with another pair and talk about the main ideas. If there were differences, have a general discussion with the class.

8. Ask students to choose one headline as their favorite and say why (short, easy to understand, complete, etc.)

9.  Ask students to give three words connected with the topic ‘newspapers’.

10. Distribute the worksheet and read the words at the bottom of the worksheet.

11. Encourage students to read the definitions and ‘guess’ what the words are.

12. Invite students to work in groups of three and check their answers.

13. Ask questions using the information in the worksheet such as, “What’s a headline?”, “What’s an article giving opinions?”, etc. and invite pairs to do the same.

1. Have the beam projector to show the activity suggested in the “Materiales Educativos Digitales” section.

2. Ask students how important are headlines and why.

3. Ask them if they have noticed the language they use.

4. Draw students’ attention to the left column and tell students those are the names of online newspapers. The middle column is a list of headlines taken from those newspapers and the right column show a word and its definition to help with the reading comprehension.

5. Start with the first newspaper and focus on the headline, read it and wait for reactions. Did they understand the topic? Then, read the word “aid” and read the headline again. Do not take extra time in presenting only vocabulary, however, encourage students to read the first  page with 14 headlines.

6. Invite students to work in groups of three and make sure they are helping each other and discussing the headlines.

7. Offer help as needed.

8. Check the exercise by reading the first headline and mentioned ‘published by (name of newspaper), what is the news about? And get different answers.

9. Invite all the groups to participate and try their answers. In case, they are incorrect, the rest of the class will help.

10. Project the second page which is the second part of the activity that started in the previous session.

11. Ask students to copy any 5 headlines from the list they like in their notebook, as well as the words and their definitions.

12. Invite students to find another classmate who wrote one of the headlines chosen and read it, comment it, then find another classmate.

13. Encourage students to identify the main idea, what it is about, and do not take extra time to focus on vocabulary.

14. Invite volunteers to read a headline and say what it is about.
