Show a calendar or draw a big one on the board and ask students to tell you what holiday they remember, special dates, celebration, etc. 3. You can help with September 16thm Independence Day, for example, or Christmas and mark it on the calendar. 4. Ask students if they know of any other celebrations in USA, maybe “Halloween”.

Ask students to pay attention to the different celebrations and start with the first part of the video. 7. Pause the video after each celebration and comment on what the cultural icons are, i.e., Easter : the bunny, eggs, etc. 8. Invite students to tell you if some of these celebrations are similar in Mexico or how different. 9. Ask students to work in pairs and challenge each other by mentioning some cultural icons of the celebrations presented.

Use the first celebration “Mothers’ Day”, play the video and pause it to discuss the information, then, write it on the table, give presents / flowers / candy / card, etc. Encourage students to use more vocabulary. 13. When the video is finished ask students to focus on the actions and help them work on sentence structure so they can talk about what activities we do /did for those celebrations. |

(September 1810), Who was Miguel Hidalgo?, What does the President Yell in the celebration? (Viva México), How do we celebrate September 16th? (with a military parade), etc. 7. Play the video again and ask students to repeat some of the sentences for practice. Then, ask some volunteers to talk about the video, Mexican Independence by saying short sentences. Help as necessary. 8. Ask students to work in pairs and talk about this celebration saying what they do / did. |

Decide if you want to work with the next page and the 9 questions about Mexican Independence which have choices. This could be a good exercise to give students some cross-curricular work by combining vocabulary, grammar, and History in English. |

Draw students’ attention towards the vocabulary box, and ask them to label the pictures with the corresponding words. 5. Ask students to exchange their worksheets and check their classmates’ answers. 6. Distribute the second worksheet , they need to write 12 sentences using those twelve words. 7. Write sentence #1 as an example using the word MEXICO. Elicit possible answers from your students and/or suggest and write, “I am from Mexico”, “My country is Mexico”. 8. Ask students to work in pairs and talk about Mexico using the sentences they wrote. |
