1. Have the beam projector ready to show the video suggested in the MED section and as for the second activity, download the file and make copies for students.

2. Ask students what the capital of Mexico is, and what continent Mexico is in, north or south? It is possible that students this age are not familiar yet with using maps, and identifying north, south, east, and west so it is recommended not to spend quality time on this topic.

3. Students are going to watch a video that shows the map of North America and Central America and guides students to see the geographical distribution of countries.

4. Pre-teach vocabulary: continent, country, island, North America, Central America

5. Play the video and make pauses so you can make comments, ask questions,

  • what country is this?,
  • what’s the name of this country?
  • where's Mexico, the USA, Canada, etc?

6. Ask students to draw the map in their notebooks and label the countries.

7. Ask students to color the different countries with different colors.

8. Present the names of the countries and ask students to repeat the names to practice pronunciation.

9. Ask students which names look and sound similar to Spanish.

10. Ask students to color North American countries in red, and the Central American countries in blue.

11 . Ask students where Mexico is and draw the Mexican flag over the country.

12 . Invite students to work in pairs and ask questions to each other, “Where’s El Salvador / Guatemala, Canada, etc.?”

1. Download the file suggested in the MED section, and save it on your computer. This is a complete set of lessons about  Argentina. You may find some interesting ideas to teach about other countries as well but print only page 9 “Los países de América”.

2. Students are going to keep exploring maps in order to get familiar with geographical distribution. It is recommended that you present the information as if you were teaching vocabulary, rather than making the students feel lost. Remember that at this young age they are still working with space and distance.

3. Review the three big divisions of the American continent (north, central, south), and where Mexico is located.

4. Distribute the map and draw students’ attention towards the list of countries to the left. At this point they must be familiar with most of the names, however, the objective of the lesson is not they are experts in geography but that are able to explore the map and identify North, Central, and South America.

3. Ask students to find the countries on the map by matching the names to their place.

5. Monitor and offer help as needed.

6. Ask questions simple questions such as

  • “Where’s Mexico? (North America),
  • Where’s Peru? (South America),
  • Where’s Guatemala?  (Central America).

7. Ask students to work in pairs and color the countries as you indicate, color in yellow two countries that start with C, color in blue a country that starts with E, color in green three countries that start with B, color in red a country that starts with M and color in orange two countries that starts with P.

8. Check the exercise with the class.

9.This second activity is about flags and nationalities as well as languages spoken in those countries. You may want to use Mexico as a general example and present that information.

10. Ask students to match the flags to their countries. Depending on the conditions of your classroom, you may want to choose some students to come to the computer and match the flags to their names since it is an interactive worksheet, or point at the flag and ask students to give you the name of the country.

11. Continue with the description of the flags by asking students to write the colors in their notebooks.

12. Check answers and invite students to draw the flags and label them.

13. Ask students to draw the Mexican flag as well.

14. Give the description of flags and ask students to say the name of the country.

1. Download the files suggested in the MED section and make copies for students. The first file comes from a  webpage that offers different maps, choose South America (black and white). As for the second activity, there are two flags templates (Argentina and Colombia). http://www.supercoloring.com/coloring-pages/argentina-flag and http://www.supercoloring.com/coloring-pages/colombia-flag

2. Students are going to reinforce knowledge about the American continent and some features so review "where's Guatemala, in North or Central America?, Where's Colombia, in Central or South America? etc. give options to choose.

3. Decide beforehand on a color code for your students to ‘read’, identify, and color the countries.

4.  Distribute the map and give the instruction, “Color Argentina in blue, Peru in red, the USA in purple, etc”

5. When the map is finished, ask students to work in pairs and challenge each other by asking their partners to complete the sentences,  “This country is blue (Argentina), this country is red …, etc.

6. Ask students to count the number of countries and write it on top of the map, In South America there are….countries”

7. Ask students to describe the Mexican flag to get into the topic of flags and descriptions.

8. Ask students how many other American flags they remember (as in North, Central, and South America, not meaning the USA flag).

9. Distribute the worksheets and ask students to color them by using the colors shown at the bottom of the page.

10. Ask students to paste the flags in their notebooks and write three sentences about the country. You may help with some stem sentences "Colombia is______. / Argentina is in _____". This may be a good moment to help/review sentence structure.

11. Ask students to read their sentences to the class, and if students listen to one sentence they didn’t write and it is correct, they should write it down.

12. Check with students how many different sentences about these two countries they collected.
