Inicio | 00:05 | 1. Say hello to the Ss. Project in the front of the classroom the video “The Cardinal Directions Geography Song” (link on the “recursos” section). The second time Ss can sing. You can print or project the lyrics. North, East, South and West, Never eat soggy worms, Never eat salty watermelon, It’s North, East, South and West North is usually up on a map, Like the 12 on a clock, 3 is to the East. At 6 were headed South. The 9 is to the west. Knowing directions is the best, 12, 3, 6 and 9. It’s a North, East, South and West Chorus: If you’re ever in between two directions and it seems like you must combine the two, well that’s just what you do: North and East, “that’s Northeast”. South and East, “that’s Southeast”, South and west “that’s Southwest” and then, we’re at Northwest. Chorus: What direction is that in? Your compass knows! Your what knows? Your compass rose! |

Desarrollo | 00:30 | Note: At least five daysprior the activity, tell Ss that they are going to observe where the sun is each morning and afternoon for five days. 2. Tell the Ss that the direction where the sun rises is called “East” and the opposite direction is called ”West”. Put the words “East” and “West” on the East and West walls of the classroom. After this, explain to the Ss that the perpendicular line to the line E-W determines the other two main directions: North and South. North is the direction to the left of a person facing the rising of the sun or to the right of a person facing the sunset. Add the “North” and “South” labels to the classroom walls. Tell the Ss open the compass app on their tablets, to show North and South and reinforce East and West. Have Ss line up the E and W on the compass with East and West labeled on the wall. Ask them to point toward the N, and explain that this direction is North. 3. Practice the directions in the room by having Ss face North first, then turn at right angles and point, naming the directions “North, South, East, and West” several times. Have Ss use cardinal directions to talk about movement also. 4. Discuss with Ssthat direction words also help us to read maps. Explain to them that, by convention, the top side of a map is North, and also that between the cardinal directions there are intermediate directions: northeast, southeast, northwest, and southwest. Give each S the “Cardinal directions worksheet”(link on the “recursos” section. Ask them to solve it individually. When they have finished, the whole class discusses about the answers. |
