Write the sentences on the board right after: • Could you help me? • May I please get some help? Remember to use different color markers to show question marks and modal verbs. Repeat the questions aloud modeling for the Ss. Write on the other side of the board and model as well: • Thank you for your help. • Thanks for helping me. 15’ Have Ss roll play using the big plastic bag: One S plays the role of the T, the other the S. 5’ T, I’m including a link to a site where you can find resources for your professional growth, and this specific time, you’ll find an illustration which you’ll use for this session. Print two times. White out the dialogue from one of those copies and reproduce enough of them as to give one to each one of the Ss. Show the image with the dialogue to Ss. Give a copy of the image without the dialogue and have them write the dialogue down in the corresponding area. 5’ From the Four kinds of helping, link in the “recursos” column, show page #2 to Ss. Explain each point. Pgs 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be your resources for this purpose. 10’ As a review: Go to the board and erase the modal verbs from the sentences. Have a S write it on the board Ask S to give you an example. Offering • I offer to help others when they need it. Ask Ss what expression they should use to offer help. Have a S write it on the board Ask S to give you an example. Accepting • I accept help from others when I need it. Ask Ss what expression they should use to accept help. Have a S write it on the board Ask S to give you an example. Rejecting • I kindly reject help from others when I don’t need it. Ask Ss what expression they should use to reject help. Have a S write it on the board Ask S to give you an example. Ask Ss what the “magic words” are we all need to use when asking, offering, accepting or rejecting help. Ss respond in group. T, remember to use different color markers to show question words/ marks. 5’ Ss respond raising their hand. This is an opportunity to practice sentence construction, word order and vocabulary. T asks, do you offer to help? Or are you asked to help? 5’ From the Teachers resource Modals, use the table shown there to explain and talk about them. Project the image on the board or draw the table on it. Link the conversation about helping at home with the use of Modals. Give examples to Ss or use the ones presented on the table as part of your explanation. Have Ss copy the table. 15’ Use the link to the video song given in the “recursos” column. The song last about 1 minute. Give Ss different scenarios where they can use the Modal verbs in situations at home and at school. Write the examples on the board, this and playing the video should take about 5’ Example at home. Dialogue between mom and child: M: Can you help with the dishes? C: No, I can’t wash the dishes. M: Could you sweep the kitchen? C: Yes, I could. C: May I sweep the kitchen now? M: No, you should wait until after dinner. Example at school.
